About
The Barnsley Healthy Workplace Adviser is a mainstream service within Barnsley MBC. The Adviser provides free advice for businesses, employees, charities and the voluntary sector.
The service works to:
- Raise awareness and improve the health, safety and lifestyle of the local workforce
- Help comply with health and safety requirements and adopt health promotion policies
- Develop health and safety policies and
- Provide risk assessments and training
Businesses access our services through direct contact, referrals from enforcement officers, or referrals through intermediaries and partner agencies (FSB, BCCI, Job Centre).
Training
Health and safety training courses are provided, covering subjects ranging from basic awareness, risk assessment, and accident investigation, to health and safety management, hazardous substances, electrical safety, manual handling, accident investigation and fire. The Healthy Workplace Award scheme has presented 21 awards to date.
Training is also provided for young people, largely from disadvantaged backgrounds, who have been excluded from school, to raise awareness and provide skills for future employment.
Partnerships
The Barnsley Healthy Workplace Adviser works with WHAMS, the HSE and Barnsley PCT on various projects. PCT projects include local drugs, alcohol and tobacco groups.

This service is funded through Regulatory Services (Environmental Health), Barnsley MBC.
