Health Works in London (HWIL) provides services to prevent and reduce ill health caused or made worse by work, and raise awareness of work-related health problems by offering free and confidential primary care services, health and safety training, and business support.

Outreach in primary care

HWIL provides independent access to occupational health and safety advice and support.

Occupational health and safety screening interviews are carried out in surgery waiting rooms to identify those with work-related ill health and to provide information and advice.

GP and self-referrals are made for people experiencing ill health which is work-related or affecting their chances of employment. The occupational health and safety assessment takes about an hour and a summary report is generated for the patient and GP with further suggested actions to take.

Tackling health barriers to employment

Several agencies collaboratively provide services to benefit unemployed people, people on sick leave, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and young people. Services focus on rehabilitation and returning to work, and reducing health and safety barriers to employment.

Health and Safety for unemployed, disengaged and disadvantaged students

HWIL have developed a health and safety programme for young people which includes partnership with a drama group to put the lessons into context. Health and Safety sessions are delivered to: unemployed students on the Gateway to New Deal Induction programme; students excluded from or bullied at school; students who suffer from a learning difficulty; and students with English as an additional language.

Small business support

Information, training and advice are provided to small businesses and voluntary organisations to improve workplace health and safety standards. Free Health and Safety Audits for employers and Body Mapping sessions for employees are also provided.

Funding

Funding is provided by: SRB6, Section 64 Department of Health, HSE, New Deal, LBN in kind, and NPCT in kind.
