The Health Protection Service is part of Environment and Regulatory Services within the Development, Environment & Leisure Directorate.

What we do

We are responsible for the promotion and enforcement of Food Safety and Health and Safety standards within the city of Sheffield. Our core activities are:

  • The routine inspection of businesses to check their compliance with Food Safety legislation and the investigation of Food Safety related complaints made by the public.
  • The routine inspection of businesses to check their compliance with Health and Safety legislation. The investigation of Health and Safety related complaints made by the public and accidents at work reported by businesses and employees.
  • The investigation of Food Poisoning incidents or Notifiable Disease outbreaks.
  • The inspection of Licensed Premises
  • The provision of Food Hygiene Training

Our overall purpose is the protection of public health and most of our work is governed by statute or national guidelines.

In order to improve the quality of our service we have also introduced internal procedures and standards which are outlined in our Service Charter.
