Sheffield Occupational Health Advisory Service (SOHAS)

submitted by Rowan Merewood last modified 2007-05-08 12:03

Sheffield Occupational Health Advisory Service (SOHAS) works to prevent and alleviate the negative effects of work on health. Advisers offer an independent, free, and confidential service to workers in the Sheffield area through GP surgeries, office appointments, and over the telephone. SOHAS also works with partner organisations across the UK, with local and national government to try and create a higher quality of working environment for everybody.

How to Get Advice

Things to do...If you would like to see one of our advisers, then you can make an appointment through your nearest paticipating GP surgery (Click here for the locations and times of our sessions), or you can contact our office directly (Click here for our contact details). You can also read a bit more about our patient services here.

We also have a collection of leaflets and articles in our Patient Information section and throughout the WHIG.

Our Other Services

Working away...In addition to our work in primary care, SOHAS provides a variety of other services. We have an specialised library of occupational health resources aimed mainly at professionals, but open to all. Throughout the year we also hold events for training and raising awareness of health and safety in the workplace.

Using our work in primary care, SOHAS has been able to build up a picture of occupational health in Sheffield. An annual look at our patient-related statistics is available here. We are continuing to expand this database, both in terms of scale and detail, making it a unique resource for analysing the effects of work on health within the city.

SOHAS also works to affect change in government policy on a local and national level. Through the National Work and Health Network we liase with similar organisations across the country to produce a consistent, national approach to occupational health advice both within our own voluntary sector and from the government. Similar activity with different groups has formed ties with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), Sheffield City Council, the Department of Health (DH), the Hazards Campaign, the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council, and many others.

Contributing

SOHAS is a voluntary sector organisation and a charity, so we always appreciate people who are willing to donate to the organisation. This could be through time spent helping in the project, materials for library, submissions for the WHIG, or maybe something else. You can make a donation through All About Giving
