The Trade Union Safety Team invites you to join our walk along Cuckoo Way from Staveley to Chesterfield along the canal. The walk will go past many industrial sites. The walk is to mark ‘Workers’ Memorial Day’ when we remember the dead and fight for the living.

Many workers or former workers suffer from Industrial diseases caused by working at many of the sites we will visit. The walk is to campaign for better working conditions for current workers and remember those that have died as a result of work related ill-health.

Why do we mark Workers’ Memorial Day?

Provisional official HSE figures for 2004/05 reveal that:

• 220 workers were killed
• 30,213 have suffered major injury
• 3,610 people have been killed by asbestos related diseases including 1,874 killed by mesothelioma

The walk will take place on Sunday 30th April 2006. Walkers will meet at the Trade Union Safety Team (TRUST), 70, Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1JR at 10.00am for registration. A mini bus is provided to Staveley and the walk will commence at approximately 10.30am. The walk is 5 ½ miles but easy walking and it is estimated will take about 3 hours which will allow for quiz questions information on points of interest. The event is FREE.
